Zoya Blyss

Happy Friday everyone!  I am so glad that the kiddies have an inservice day today.  Getting up at 6a every morning has been killing me.  I'm such a night owl, that I don't fall asleep until 2a or later, so those early mornings have been a little rough.  I'm not sure how I'll handle it if I ever get a real job again where I have to get up regularly in the morning and then stay awake the rest of the day.  LOL.

Anyway, today, I have for you one of the my purchases from Zoya's most recent BOGO deal.  Each time they run one of those, I tell myself that I don't need any more Zoyas and yet, I keep finding myself purchasing more.  What can I saw, I'm a sucker for both a sale and for Zoya polishes.  In my last order I ordered 8 polishes and all of them were either a purple or a creamy pink/coral.  Today, I have one of the purples, Zoya Blyss...

Zoya Blyss is a bright magenta purple with a slight frosty-metallic finish.  Zoya states that Blyss has a strong blue duochrome, but honestly, I didn't see it.  I saw the potential for a blue flash, but it didn't really happen, in my experience.  Blyss was much like Zoya Hayden (one of my biggest Zoya disappointments) in this regard.  Also like Hayden, the formula seemed very watery at first.  It took me 3 coats to reach total opacity, and even then I felt like I was wanting the color to be richer and stronger.  I still liked it, I just wish it was a little more pigmented.  

Though the formula was thin.  I had no issues with application.  It flowed nicely on the nail and I had no issues with it flooding the cuticle, which is something that often happens to me with a polish is on the watery side.

Zoya Song and Ivanka Gradient Mani

I couple of days ago, I saw this picture on Zoya's Facebook Page...

Turns out it was a share from Zoya Russia's Facebook Page.  I immediately fell in love with the colors and as I had both Song and Ivanka, I decided to do a gradient manicure with those colors.  Here's what I came up with...

This is 2 coats of Song with 2 coats of Ivanka on my tips.  I did one coat from about the middle of my nail up and then a second coat closer to my free edge.  

Also, I know with creme polishes, to create a gradient, you have to use a makeup sponge and make sure that you get just the right airbrushed effect.  However, with shimmer polishes, they are a bit more forgiving.  I was able to achieve this with only the brushes that came with the polishes.  So, if you are wanting to create a gradient look and can't find your sponges (like me) or simply don't want to be bothered with a bunch of extra steps, then a sparkly gradient may just want you are looking for. 

I hope you love this look as much as I do.  I can't wait to try it with a few other of Zoya's shimmer metallics.

Golden Lace Stamped Nails

For this manicure, I used 2 coats of Zoya Goldie as a base and then stamped a design using 2 stamping designs and Konad Special Polish in black.  

I recently purchased Goldie during Zoya's 3 for $10 Share the Love promotion.  I had been wanting to try it for quite a while, but never got around to purchasing it.  Golds are so iffy with me.  I have mentioned my love/hate relationship with gold polishes several times on this blog.  I adore gold polishes in the bottle.  Unfortunately, if the gold polish is a bright and strong shade of gold, it makes my hands look not-so-good.  So, when I read on Zoya's website that Goldie is in the "cool" family, I thought maybe, just maybe, it would work my skin.  Sadly, it gives me red-hands as well. 

Because of this, I figured I would have to use Goldie as a base for layering or for nail art.  That's when I decided to try this design.  It had been floating around in my head for a few weeks, and I really love the way it came out.  To create the lace, I first stamped the fishnet design from Konad plate m57.  I then stamped the all-over roses design from Konad plate m65 over the fishnet.  I then topped the whole thing with 2 coats of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri topcoat (it was still a little rough after one coat).

Zoya Diva NYFW 2012 Collection Review

Yesterday, I showed you the small collection of jellies, Gloss, from Zoya's fall collections and today, I have for you the metallics collection, Diva...

Daul - sheer plum base loaded with golden metallic shimmer.  Daul is one of the 2 shimmer metallics polishes in this collection.  The base on this one was pretty sheer, though it was buildable to opacity.  The star of the show on this one is the shimmer.  And when I say "loaded with golden shimmer", I mean "LOADED with golden shimmer".  It's super pretty, but I think the golden shimmer is also a wee bit distracting.  I kind of wish that the base was a little more pronounced, as in some lights, the base all but goes away and all you see is the shimmer.  The formula on this one was good, but sheer and it took 3 coats to reach opacity.

Elisa - Red foil.  I love red foils.  I think I have 3 of them (all discontinued OPIs) and I am happily adding Elisa to my collection.  The red on this one doesn't lean either blue or orange, and is a perfect holiday red, and it reminds me of wrapping paper.  The formula on this one, like almost all of the foils in this collection is very good.  It's almost a one-coater, though I had a few thin spots and ended up with 2 coats.

FeiFei - sheer blue base with multi-color metallic shimmer.  FeiFei is the second shimmer metallic in this collection.  When I first saw early swatches of her, I thought she was going to be dupey to Zoya Crystal, and she is somewhat similar.  However, while Crystal was golden shimmer in an icy blue base, FeiFei has multi-colored (gold, purple, blue, pink, purple) shimmer in a sheer blue-grey base (that gets bluer the more coats you apply).  The formula on this one was very similar to Daul, though a tad thicker. 3 coats.  

Ray - evergreen foil.  Like Elisa, this one is perfect for the holidays.  When I saw it in the bottle, I thought it was going to be similar to Zoya Suvi, but it's actually much lighter and doesn't have the blackened base.  This one had a thinner formula than Elisa, and it took me more coats to reach opacity. Also, this one is a bit frosty in the finish, which isn't at all unattractive and works with the color, but it will give you faint brushstrokes.  3 coats.  

Song - bright blue foil with tonal shimmer.  I am crazy in love with Song.  I can't tell you all just how much I love this polish.  It's like Zoya reached in my head, picked out my dream polish and turned it in to reality.  It reminds me somewhat of OPI Swimsuit...Nailed It!, but it doesn't lean turquoise at all.  It is a straight up bright blue.  Also, the formula is fantastic.  It was opaque at one coat, but I did 2 just out of habit.  In case, you haven't figured it out, Song is my favorite of this collection.  If you love shimmery blues like me, then you NEED this one.  

Suri - imperial purple foil with red and blue shimmer.  I love this tone of purple.  It's so pretty and flattering on every skin tone.  I especially loved the speckles of blue and red in this polish.  I know that purple shimmer with red and blue sparkles isn't incredibly unique, but seeing it in a foil finish is unique, in my opinion.  The finish on this one was in-between that of Song and Ray.  It's a foil with shimmer, like Song, but it also was prone to strokes, like Ray.  2 coats.

I think Zoya knocked it out of the park with this collection.  There isn't a single one that I don't like.  I think if I had to pick one I wasn't completely in love with, I would pick Daul, but it is a beautiful color and is especially pretty when layered under Zoya Katherine (from the Gloss collection).  My favorite is Song followed by FeiFei and Suri.

Zoya Gloss NYFW 2012 Collection Review

My favorite time of the polish year is upon us, and that is when the fall collections start rolling out.  Even though it's hotter than blue blazes outside, on my nails, I can pretend that I'm wearing sweaters and watching football.  :)  And Zoya's fall releases are always some of the ones that I look the most forward to.  This year, Zoya has 3 collections, each of which are " 'haute' off the New York Fashion Week Fall 2012 Runway".   These collections consist of a set of six creme polishes (Designer), a set of six metallic/shimmer polishes (Diva), and a small set of three jelly polishes (Gloss).  Today, I have for you the Gloss collection.

I chose this one to be my first to review because I have fallen in love with jellies.  I love the squishy quality and shiny finish to jellies, and these babies are no exception...

Frida - dark teal jelly.  Frida was my problem child of the bunch.  I loved her in the bottle.  On the nail, she took the longest to reach opacity.  The above picture is 4 coats and I still have nail lines.  Also, I'm just going to throw it out there that at one or 2 coats, it kinda has the color of green-death NyQuil.  :/  So, you are probably going to want to use more coats with this one, if you use it alone.  That said, Frida is amazing (AMAZING!) when layered...

This is one coat of Zoya Frida layered over 2 coats of Zoya FeiFei (a blue shimmer metallic from the Diva collection).  I absolutely love this one layered.  It changes FeiFei from a slate blue to a gorgeous aquamarine.  So, so pretty.  

Katherine - aubergine jelly.  Katherine was created for Peter Som and was previously offered as part of a limited edition set.  So for all of you that didn't pick her up back in the winter, now's your chance.  Katherine is very pretty color.  I say it's aubergine, but there is a lot of brown in the base.  The formula on this one was a little thicker than Frida.  The above picture is 3 coats, and while there are thin spots in the macro picture, they weren't noticeable in person.  Like Frida, Katherine is amazing when layered...

This is one coat of Katherine over 2 coats of Zoya Daul (a plum shimmer metallic also from Diva).  The bases in Katherine and Daul were relatively similar, so while it didn't transform the color, like with Frida and FeiFei, it is a beautiful combination.  

Paloma - mulberry jelly.  Okay, so I know that berry shades in fall collections are not original.  But, this one is fantastic and my favorite of the collection.  Maybe it's the jelly finish or the super-shiny finish, but there is just something about this one that had me at hello.  I also really liked it with my skin tone.  The formula is perfect and I was able to reach total opacity in 3 coats.  And yes, like the other 2 in this collection, Paloma perfect for layering...

This is 2 coats of Zoya Paloma over 2 coats of Zoya Song (a bright blue metallic from Diva).  I had already used the 2 shimmer metallics from Diva for layering, so I wondered what would happen if I used Song.  The answer?  Awesomeness!  :P  I really, really love this combo.  It's a little hard to see in my photo, but in person, the sparkle within Song pops as red and purple flecks because of the color of Paloma layered over top.  

I really like this small collection of jellies from Zoya.  You jelly-fans will not be disappointed.  Also, I wanted to mention that a lot of comparisons have been made between these polishes and OPI's sorbet polishes from last year.  The finish on them is similar, so if you loved the sorbets (which were essentially jellies with a slightly thicker texture), you will love these.  

If I had to pick favorites, I would say Paloma, Katherine, and then Frida, but honestly, for layering, all of these are amazing.  You could transform just about any polish with a simply coat or 2 of one of these polishes.  And they self level well, which is great for layering.

Candeo Colors Jellybean

Okay, so here's the deal... I hate to say it, but I am pretty much over the indie polish craze, and it I has nothing to do with the polishes themselves or the creators of the indie polishes (both of which can be fabulous), and everything to do with the purchasing process.

I just hate feeling like I'm in the middle of a derby or Black Friday when I go to purchase something.  I like to take my time, stare at swatches and pore over reviews.  But with the popular indies, those are luxuries of time you just don't have if you want to snag one of them.  Thus, I've declared that I've (almost) given up on purchasing these polishes.  Almost, because even though I'm not a fan of the process, there are still some indie polishes that I want to add to my collection.  

One of those polishes was Candeo Colors Jellybean.  In fact, I tried to get a couple of months ago, but it sold-out in minutes.  So the other day, when I happened to see on Facebook that the creator, Melinda, was offering 40 mini bottles of several of her top-sellers, including Jellybean, I set the alarm on my phone and made plans to be at home when the product hit her site.  I also had plans of getting Orchid (my other Candeo Colors lemming), but it was put into carts before I could add that one to mine (it was a matter of seconds. LOL).  So, I figured I'd get Orchid at a later date and just got Jellybean, and I am soooo happy I did...

This is 2 coats of Jellybean over 2 coats of Zoya Pippa.  Jellybean is a sheer, pale yellow base loaded with large blue, pink, and purple glitter and small pink, green, and yellow glitter.  I had a hard time reaching opacity with this one on it's own so, in my opinion, it's best to layer this one.  I like it over a brighter yellow base, Pippa, because it makes the colors of the glitter pop against the background.  Although, this would look just as pretty over a lighter yellow base, as the base on this one is a soft yellow (see below).  

Alternatively, could also "sandwich" this with a yellow jelly, such as Nubar Lemon, or a sheer yellow.  I tried it with the latter and used a previously-frustrating sheer yellow, BB Couture for Nails Kokomo...

This is one coat of Jellybean sandwiched between 4 coats of Kokomo.  I used 3 coats on the base and 1 coat over top of Jellybean.  Unfortunately, Kokomo is now discontinued, but any pale, sheer-ish yellow would work.

Minnie Mouse Nails

Right before I was getting ready to remove Zoya Layla, I decided to play around with stamping and nail art (this has become a common occurrence for me).  This design was created using the polka-dot stamp from BundleMonster plate BM19.  I used Konad Special Polish in white for the dots.  I then added a black french and a silver glitter, using a glitter striper to hide any unevenness in my line.  To create the black french, I first stamped a french design on my nail using BundleMonster plate B39 and Konad Special Polish in Black.  I then filled in the design of the french, making it solid, using Color Club Where's the Soiree.  It's not a traditional way to create a french, but so much easier than freehanding or using french guides.  

I really wasn't even thinking of Minnie Mouse when I came up with the design.  However, once I completed it, I looked down and that's the first thing that popped in my head.  I think this design is so cute and if I wasn't ready to remove Layla, I probably would have kept it on my nails.

Zoya Layla

As I've mentioned on this blog several times, Zoya Charisma, is probably my favorite Zoya polish, and easily in my top 10 polishes of all time.  It's perfect.  I love everything about it. In fact, as soon as I got Charisma a few years ago, I immediate searched on their website for colors with similar application, color, and finish to add to my collection.  That's when I discovered that Zoya had a pink polish that was very close, in every way but color, to Charisma.  That color was Zoya Layla.  I immediately added her to my wishlist, for some reason but I kept picking other polishes whenever Zoya would offer a sale.  I guess I kept thinking "it's only a pink".  Finally, I picked it up during the most recent BOGO sale.  Unfortunately, shortly after I added her to my stash, she grew legs and walked away (LOL).  I finally found her during my recent reorganization, and given my recent attraction to bright pinks, I couldn't wait to get her on my nails...

This is 2 coats of Layla with one coat of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri topcoat.

Zoya's website describes Layla as "an ultra-bright hot magenta pink creme".  However, in my opinion, while it is "hot pink", it's definitely not magenta.  On me, it's most-certainly hot pink, but I also see a touch of coral.  I kept wondering if the light inside my house was playing tricks on me, so I purposefully waited to write this post until I had worn this polish in several locations, but no matter the lighting, I still see a hint of coral.  In bright light, such as at my gym, it's a little less coral, but it's still there.

I love, love, love this one.  In fact, last night while I was working out, I kept getting distracted by my pretty pink nails.  Also, if you are liking the look of the newly released neons that are hitting the market, but a little scared of wearing high-lighter pink on your nails, Layla is a good choice.  

The formula is good and I had no issues with application.  I still had thin spots at 2 coats, so on most of my nails, I added a third.  Additionally, like Charisma, Layla is almost a neon, and it does dry a bit satiny, so you will need to add a topcoat to make it shiny.  

Honestly, I love everything about this polish.  The only downside is that I now cannot get "Layla" by Eric Clapton out of my head.  :P

X Out Inspired Nail Art Project

Recently, I received an email from Gunthy-Renker's PR regarding a nail art project they are hosting for one of their brands, X Out.  X Out is a acne medication specifically for teens, created by the founders of Proactiv.

The idea behind the project is to create an nail art look inspired by X Out's packaging and manifesto.  For every participating blogger in this project, Gunthy-Renker will donate $200 to Pacer's National Bullying Prevention Center.  As soon as I read that, I was more than happy to participate.  <3

To assist with the idea process, X Out sent out a a PR image of their packaging for X Out, as well as their "manifesto"...

When I first saw the PR images, my mind immediately thought of a literal translation to take the letter "X" and words from their packaging, and put them on my  nails.  The only problem is that I kind of stink at freehand nail art and I really don't have any proper supplies for freehand art (my kids steal my brushes).  Thus, I realized I needed to think more outside of the box.

So I re-read the "manifesto" and remembered just what it was like to be a teenager.  I'm 37, which to teens may seem old, but honestly, I feel like I was just there (guess my parents really weren't as ancient as I made them out to be.  :P).  I remembered being pulled in a thousand directions, all-the-while trying to be somewhat cool and get my resume college-ready at the same time.  Now that I have a mortgage and kids and I'm 20 years out of high school, it all seems somewhat simpler than life now, but I definitely remember high school being a stressful time.  I also remember it being fun and a little (lot) crazy.

So I took all of that in to consideration and this is what I came up with...

Using the colors in X Out's packaging and "manifesto", I used Zoya Malia and Zoya Yummy to create a gradient as the base.  This is 2 coats of Malia with 2 coats of Yummy sponged over top.  I then used Konad Special Polish in black to stamp the "stars and arrows" design from BundleMonster plate BM20 over the gradient.  I then added one coat of Deborah Bring on the Bling over the stamp to add a bit of sparkle.  

I really, really loved the final product on this and it has spawned tons of other ideas in my head.  It also got me compliments from the drive-thru girl at Burger King (it makes my day when people ask to see my nails).  :)

Zoya Izzy and Zoya Kissy

Last year, Zoya introduced Gems and Jewels, a small collection of 6 polishes made up of 3 metallic shimmers and 3 corresponding bar glitter topcoats.  When I received them for review, it was during the time where I was unable to blog, so I never got around to swatching them and reviewing them.

However, as I am showing you untried pinks during this week, I figured I would show you the pink duo in this collection, Zoya Izzy and Zoya Kissy...

This is Zoya Izzy, a bright pink metallic shimmer, by herself.  

The 2 pictures above show 2 coats of Zoya Kissy, a dense glitter topcoat with fine pink bar glitter, pink microglitter, and holo bar glitter, in a clear base, over 2 coats of Zoya Izzy. 

I love this one.  The application on both of these was perfect.  I had no glitter drag with Kissy, which was a big plus.  I know these were released during holiday 2011, but I think Izzy, either with Kissy or alone, would be perfect for a summer pedicure.

Zoya Gems and Jewels

30 Days of Blues for Autism Awareness - Zoya Jo

Welcome to DAY 30 (!) in my "30 Days of Blues".  I care about this cause so much, and this was such a little thing for me to do, but dang if I don't want another color on my nails.  LOL.  

For today's manicure, I went back to probably my favorite brand, Zoya, and picked an untried for me.  This is Zoya Jo...

This is 2 coats of Zoya Jo, a medium, dusty, denim blue shimmer.  I used Nfu Oh 61 and BundleMonster plate BM21 for the bottom stamped design.  I then used Konad White Special Polish and BundleMonster plate B11 for the flower.

I kind of did this out of necessity because the BundleMonster full-nail designs don't completely cover some of my wider nails.  Thus, I applied the flower as a way to mask this.  However, I really love this design.  I'd forgotten just how much I love layering stamped designs.

30 Days of Blues for Autism Awareness - Zoya Phoebe with Rescue Beauty Lounge Locavore

Today is Day 18 in my "30 Days of Blues" and today I have for you Zoya Phoebe with Rescue Beauty Lounge Locavore as an accent nail...

This is 3 coats of Zoya Phoebe, a neon, matte cerulean blue, and RBL Locavore, a green, purple, gold, and blue glitter-bomb, on my ring finger.  

I normally put a topcoat over Phoebe, as I'm kinda over the matte thing, but I liked the contrast so much between the satiny finish of Phoebe and the sparkle of Locavore that I decided to leave it matte.

30 Days of Blues for Autism Awareness - I love "blue" "cherry" much!

Today is Day 16 in my "30 Days of Blues" for Autism Awareness.  Sorry for the completely corny title of this one.  LOL.

Anyway, for today, I decided I wanted to do another deep blue, but this time, I wanted to punch it up with some lighter and brighter color.  I chose a base of Nina Ultra Pro Sailor and then threw the kitchen sink at it...

I used 2 coats of Nina Ultra Pro Sailor (a rich, navy creme) and then applied a cherry stamp design using the all-over cherry design from BundleMonster plate BM21 and the single cherry design from BundleMonster plate B70 using Konad White Special Polish.  I then used my largest dotting tool and applied Zoya Shelby on a few of the cherries.  Last, but not least, I then added a coat of Deborah Lippmann Bring on the Bling.  

I think this one is so much fun.  Unfortunately, Sailor has been d/c'd, but to my naked eye, it looks to be relatively dupey to RBL Dead Calm and China Glaze First Mate (though I didn't do a direct comparison to First Mate and I blog-sold Dead Calm).  All the other polishes I used are easily obtainable.

30 Days of Blues for Autism Awareness - Zoya Wednesday

Today is Day 15 in my "30 Days of Blues".  Part me is so happy I am half-way through with my 30 Day challenge.  That part includes my blue-stained nails.  LOL.  And yet another part of me is going to miss it when it's over.  I think even after this month is over, I am still going to have "Blue Mondays" every week.  

Anyway, today's blue is a relatively new addition to my collection.  I reviewed this polish when I reviewed Zoya's summer collection, but 1. because I got some flack for my swatches, and 2. it's just a freaking awesome color, I wanted to re-visit it...

I realize this is another color with which I may be stretching the definition of "blue", but hey... Zoya calls this one aquamarine, and aquamarines are blue stones, so that's good enough for me.  :P

This is 2 coats of Zoya Wednesday that I topped with one coat of Nicole by OPI Make a Comet-ment (a fine, holographic glitter top coat) on my tips.  I also added a stamp below Make a Comet-ment using Konad White Special polish and the floral design from BundleMonster plate BM04. 

Zoya Wednesday is available at Zoya.com and Nicole by OPI Make a Comet-ment is a Target exclusive, but as it's still on Target's website, I'm assuming that it's in the regular line-up and is still available in-store.

30 Days of Blues for Autism Awareness - Zoya Breezi

Today is Day 12 in my "30 Days of Blues" for Autism Awareness and today's blue polish is Zoya Breezi...

I apologize for only have one photo today.  I've been trying to take more shots of my manicures, including outdoor pictures, but I just wasn't satisfied with any of the pictures I took for today, so I had to go with the one photo that was, in my opinion, relatively decent.

Anyway, Zoya Breezi is a dusty, medium-toned Aegean blue creme.  This polish is from Zoya's Summertime collection from Summer 2011.  It's dustier and deeper than Zoya Robyn.  The formula on Breezi is fantastic.  She was almost a one-coater, but I did 2 because there were a few thin spots.  I just realized that I have used several Zoyas in my "30 Days" posts.  I'm guessing that's because, at some point, Zoya has replaced OPI as my favorite brand.  OPI will always have my favorite pro-wide brush, but I am finding myself constantly impressed with Zoya's formula and their color range.

Zoya Breezi is available for purchase from Zoya's website.  Zoyas retail for $8 a bottle, though I highly recommend that you follow them on Facebook and/or Twitter, as they frequently offer promotions.

And because no manicure is no complete with out something over it, I went with a simply konad design over my tips in Konad Black Special Polish (which streaked on me something awful, despite waiting several minutes for it to dry) using a floral design from Konad plate m51.
