OPI Outrageous Neons Boxed Set Review

A few days ago, I showed you Deborah Lippmann's boxed neon set, Run the World (Girls), and today, I have for you the other mini neon set out on the market, OPI's Outrageous Neons...

Set in the box.  From left to right, contains a white base, yellow, orange, pink, and purple neons, and a topcoat.  

Ridiculously Yellow - neon, daffodil yellow.  This is the only one of the 4 that I showed over the white base (like with the Lippmann, I had streaking with the darker colors over white).  It's a little brighter than it's Lippmann counterpart, being a daffodil yellow, rather than an egg yolk yellow.  Picture shown is 2 coats over 2 coats of the White Base.  

Formidably Orange - bright, red-orange neon.  This one reminded me of a neon version of OPI A Good Man-darin is Hard to Find (much like the Lippmann).  3 coats.  

Riotously Pink - bright pink neon.  This pink is very bright, but it's not retina-searing like Orly Beach Cruiser.  I think this one would look amazing with a black stamped design.  3 coats. 

Seriously Purple - magenta purple neon.  This one had a lot of red in the base, and reminded me of Zoya Charisma.  3 coats.

The formula on all of these was very similar.  It took 3 coats to reach opacity.  You will also want to wait a few minutes between coats as they are prone to drag.  

My biggest issue with these is the size of the bottle.  I never use up a bottle of polish, so the amount of polish you get (a eighth of an ounce) isn't my problem.  It's just that the brush is so itty-bitty.  :P  I also found myself wishing for a different color, such as a blue or a green or a bright (non red) purple.

Deborah Lippmann Run the World (Girls) Boxed Set

So, I have been lemming this Deborah Lippmann neon boxed set for months.  As soon as I saw the press release, I immediately said "want".   I kept putting it off because it was only a set of minis and it was $45, but as soon as I saw that HSN had it for $35 and it was on value-pay, I snatched it up.  I got it a few weeks ago, and finally had a chance to swatch it...

Isn't the packaging the cutest?  I love that the polish bottles form the nail colors when you put the lid on the box.  I'm a sucker for adorable packaging.  

The colors themselves are a set of 5 neons, each of them named after a song with "girl" in the title...

Hollaback Girl - red-orange neon.  Hollaback Girl surprised me a little bit.  I thought it was going to be more orange when it was in the bottle, but then when I applied it, you could definitely see the red coming through.  It's like a neon version of OPI A Good Man-darin is Hard to Find.  Also, I now have "Hollaback Girl" stuck in a continuous loop in my head.

I Kissed a Girl - candy pink neon.  I Kissed a Girl is a gorgeous medium pink, with a good amount of blue in the base.  It reminded me of Orly Beach Cruiser, in that it's a neon pink, but unlike Beach Cruiser, it doesn't burn your retinas.  I really loved this color and it is one of my 2 favorites in this set, and it's the one that I wish she would sell as a full-sized single.  I had no issues with the formula.  3 coats.

It Girl - bright yellow neon.  It Girl was the sheerest of the bunch and is the only one that is a true jelly.  Personally, I didn't really like it alone on my nails, as it is almost the color of egg yolks.  However, I loved it when layered over white.  The first picture is 3 coats of It Girl by itself and the second color is 2 coats of It Girl layered over 2 coats of Nails Inc Floral Street.

Nasty Girl - magenta neon.  Nasty Girl was my second favorite in this set.  It's a beautiful magenta-purple and was the most opaque of the bunch.  I was able to reach opacity in 2 coats, but I used 3 to be consistent.  It did remind me a bit of Zoya Charisma, though, so I need to do a comparison.  Although, I think Nasty Girl leans a bit more red.  I used a topcoat over this polish to show you how they look when you apply topcoat.  

Party Girl - coral neon.  I say this is a coral, but keep in mind that this is a very red-based coral, like Rescue Beauty Lounge Bangin' (I don't have it to compare, unfortunately).  Again, the formula was very nice and I used 3 coats.  I did have a bit of a wonky brush on Party Girl, but it wasn't hard to control.

I think I may be in love with this set.  It's really cute, but also, all of the colors, except for It Girl are very wearable.  You can also make It Girl wearable simply by giving her a little foundation (is it wrong that I keep wanting to say "nail polish panties"? LOL).  I tried the other colors over white, and they didn't seem to play as nice, so they are definitely colors that can be work on their own.  The one thing I wish Deborah had changed was substitute one of the red-based polishes, Hollaback Girl and Party Girl, with another neon (blue or green) or perhaps even a bright white, though I realize she probably used the colors she did from a continuity stand-point.  

Also, the finish on these dries, what Deborah Lippmann calls, "demi-matte".  To me, they are more of a rubbery finish, like some of the Illamasqua polishes.  In some reviews I read of this set, I saw that many people were complaining of the finish.  Keep in mind, the finish is par for the course with neon polishes.  If you want to make your neons shiny, simply add a swipe of topcoat, like I did with Nasty Girl above.  Easy peasy.  

This set retails for $45, though I found it cheaper on HSN.com, though sadly, it's no longer on value-pay.  The set includes five 0.27 fl oz minis.  So, if you use retail pricing, that's $8 per mini or about half the price of a regular sized Lippmann polish.   Which isn't bad for these considering they are a good sized mini (much larger that the OPI minis which are an 1/8th of an ounce).   Yes, this is girl-math.  :)

China Glaze On Safari Review

Today, I have for you four polishes from China Glaze's new fall collection, On Safari.  I'm not feeling very wordy while writing this, so I'll just jump right in to the polishes (stop... I can hear you saying "Thank God" lol)...

Adventure Red-y - deep red creme.  This is the perfect shade of red for fall, and I especially loved it on my short nails.  There is a bit of brown in the base, but not so much that it looks like dried blood (like some deep reds I've seen).  The formula on this one was perfect.  It was practically a one-coater, but I ended up doing 2 coats.

Exotic Encounters - teal green creme.  Another perfect fall variation of a color.  This one was slightly dusty in the base, and also a little more teal that my picture portrays.  The formula on this one wasn't as thick as Adventure Red-y, but I was still able to reach opacity in 2 coats.

I Herd That - small multi-colored and gold glitter in a clear base.  The multi-colored glitter is a mix of red, green, and orange, along with the prominent gold glitter.  This is one of 2 glitters in this collection.  The other one being I'm Not Lion (which I don't have).  These 2 glitters remind me of the small glitters in China Glaze's special glitters collection from 2009.  The above picture is 3 coats, and while on macro, you can see thin spots, to the naked eye, it was full coverage.  

Kalahari Kiss - yellow-based khaki creme.  This one is a bit of an odd duck, much like Classic Camel from China Glaze's 2010 Vintage Vixen collection (though of course, that one is a shimmer) or Barielle's Angora Aura.  In the bottle, I didn't think this one would work with my skin-tone, but I really like it on the nail.  The formula was a bit streaky, and was prone to slide on the nail, so I applied a coat of CND Stickey before I swatched the above picture.  With the sticky base coat, I was able to reach opacity in 2 coats.  Be sure to wait a few minutes in-between coats with this one.

I really liked all of the 4 colors in this collection that I had the opportunity to review.  My hands-down favorite was Adventure Red-y, mainly because of formula and application (plus, the color is really pretty).  That said, there isn't one in the 4 that I wouldn't recommend.

Jessica Cosmetics Gelato Mio! Collection Review

It seems like we have been seeing neons as the nail trend this summer, with every major brand releasing a neon collection, and like with almost all trends, I embrace it early on, and then get a little tired of it as the season wears on.  That's why when I saw the press release for Jessica's Gelato Mio! collection, it was a breath of fresh air.

Gelato Mio! is a collection of six ice cream inspired creme nail polish shades, that, while not at all neons, practically screamed summer to me...

Banana Peel - light banana-pudding yellow.  As I've mentioned several times, I have really fallen in love with yellows over the past few months, and while I think I prefer brighter yellows on my skintone, I really like Banana Peel.  And I'm not sure if you can describe a nail polish as "fluffy", but that's the word that came to mind while I was swatching and reviewing this polish.  It's so light and airy, and like all of these polishes, perfect for summer.   

Barely Blueberry - light blue.  It seems like I have been searching for the perfect sky blue for years with no luck.  Then over the last few months, I find three that I love... Julep Jessica, Deborah Lippmann Let's Hear it for the Boy, and this one.  Honestly, I would have a hard time choosing a favorite between the three, but if Juleps are out of your comfort zone because of bottle shape and expense, and the Lippmann is no longer available, then Barely Blueberry would be a fabulous option.  It's is such a pretty sky blue, and unlike some blues I've tried along these same lines, it doesn't give me red-hands.  

Lime Cooler - light, kiwi green.  Gorgeous light, yet bright green, that is pretty unique in my collection. If you are looking for a lime green that isn't too yellow, definitely check out Lime Cooler.   Sometimes, like with certain pale blues, this type of color can my skin look red or dirty, but this one doesn't.  It also had one of the thicker formulas.  

Strawberry Shake It - pale candy pink.  To me, this one is color of strawberry taffy.  Like Banana Peel, the color was almost "fluffy".  It is a gorgeous shade, but I think for me, it's almost too light to work with my skin.  It's still super pretty, and I think it would look fantastic on darker skin or tanned skin.

Surfer Boyz 'n Berry - light aqua.  This one is a great marriage of blue and green and reminds me of the color of the water in some exotically tropical locale.  It seems similar to Zoya Wednesday, but I think Wednesday has more green in it.  I love this kind of color, and Surfer Boyz 'n Berry is no exception.  It's my favorite of the collection.  It also has one of the the thicker formulas.

Tangerine Dreamz - light-toned, creamy, medium orange.  This one is the color of orange push pops.  It's also a lighter orange that works with my skintone.  Looking at it makes me want ice cream or an Orange Julius.  :P  This one is one of the brighter shades in the collection.

As you will notice, I didn't really say much about the formulas or the number of coats in my descriptions.  That's because the formulas are very similar.  The lighter colors, Banana Peel, Barely Blueberry, and Strawberry Shake It, had the thinnest and streakiest formulas, but they were still manageable and opaque in 2 coats.  The darker shades, Lime Cooler, Surfer Boyz 'n Berry, and Tangerine Dreamz, had thicker formulas and were two-coaters.  

As I said above, I think this is a perfect summer collection.  My favorites is Surfer Boyz 'n Berry, but there isn't a one of them that I don't like.  I would probably not pick up Strawberry Shake It, simply because it did look a little chalky on my, but it's still beautiful and if you have more olive in your skin, it would look super pretty.

Happy Father's Day!

I wanted to do a special manicure for Father's Day, but I couldn't decide on what.  This idea is one that has been floating around in my brain for several months now, and I thought Father's Day was the perfect occasion for which to make it happen.  And for any other "Good Eats" nerds out there... yes, this was inspired by Alton Brown's mixer.  :P

I think it turned out perfect.  :)

This is 2 coats of Deborah Lippmann Stormy Weather, a rich, graphite grey creme, as a base.  I then applied the flames using BundleMonster plate BM12 and Konad Special Polish in red and yellow.  To create the swirled effect in the flames, I first covered the design with the yellow stamping polish and then topped that polish with drops of the red stamping polish and used the pointed end of an orange stick to mix them.  I then scraped the polish and applied the stamp as usual.  

On my ring fingers, I wanted to create an accent nail, so rather than starting with the yellow polish, I first put down the red polish and then topped it with drops of yellow.  I then sealed in the whole thing  with Sally Hansen Insta-Dri topcoat.  

I love this look.  Even Tim, who usually couldn't care less about my manicures, said this one looked "bad ass".  I hope you love this one as much I do, and for any dads reading... I hope you have a fabulous day!

Dollish Polish Random Dancing

Just when I say I am over the indie polish craze, Dollish Polish, one of my 2 favorite indie brands, re-stocked her shop.  And in her re-opening, she stocked 2 of my Dollish Polish lemmings, GTL and It's a Me, Mario.  So, of course, I had to eat my words and stalk her website all morning until the inventory went live.  As soon as I saw "add to cart", I rushed to add those 2 polishes to my cart.  Unfortunately, I was a minute or two behind, so all the full-sizes of GTL and Mario had already been snatched up, and I had to settle for the minis.  But the upside to that was that I got to add the Mystery Polish, the holo-tastic Toxic Avenger, to my cart with absolutely no guilt.  :)  Dolly has stated that she is now furiously packing up polishes and all orders will be shipping within the next 2 weeks.  So now I have to wait patiently.  LOL.

She also posted updated information in her shop showing the next 2 restocks, which should happen at the end of June and and early July, respectively.  For your reference, click here for a link to Dolly's site showing the next 3 restocks.

Thankfully, for my wallet and my sanity, I only want one of the restocked colors and that's I'm a Material Girl, which won't be restocked until late July.  However, I know that may of you are still lemming Random Dancing and Putting on the Ritz, both of which I already have.  Thus, I thought I would stoke the lemming-fire just a little bit and show you pics of both of these.  Today, I have for you Random Dancing, and I will show you Putting on the Ritz within the next few days...

This is 3 coats of Random Dancing over OPI Who the Shrek are You?, which probably wasn't the best choice for my skintone, but I absolutely love the colors in Random Dancing over the bright chartreuse Shrek-green of the OPI.  Random Dancing consists of multiple sized and shaped glitter in shades of blue, green, purple, golden yellow, and hot pink in a clear base.  Best part?  It has square glitter, which I absolutely love.

When I first got it, I had a hard time finding a color to wear under it, as it just didn't work over black or white, IMO.   But I've found it best to take one of the colors in the mix, in this case, I used the green, and then go a shade or two lighter as a base color. 

Random Dancing does take a while to dry, so it's best to wait a couple of minutes between coats and then a couple of minutes before you apply your base and then wait it out.  LOL.

Candeo Colors Jellybean

Okay, so here's the deal... I hate to say it, but I am pretty much over the indie polish craze, and it I has nothing to do with the polishes themselves or the creators of the indie polishes (both of which can be fabulous), and everything to do with the purchasing process.

I just hate feeling like I'm in the middle of a derby or Black Friday when I go to purchase something.  I like to take my time, stare at swatches and pore over reviews.  But with the popular indies, those are luxuries of time you just don't have if you want to snag one of them.  Thus, I've declared that I've (almost) given up on purchasing these polishes.  Almost, because even though I'm not a fan of the process, there are still some indie polishes that I want to add to my collection.  

One of those polishes was Candeo Colors Jellybean.  In fact, I tried to get a couple of months ago, but it sold-out in minutes.  So the other day, when I happened to see on Facebook that the creator, Melinda, was offering 40 mini bottles of several of her top-sellers, including Jellybean, I set the alarm on my phone and made plans to be at home when the product hit her site.  I also had plans of getting Orchid (my other Candeo Colors lemming), but it was put into carts before I could add that one to mine (it was a matter of seconds. LOL).  So, I figured I'd get Orchid at a later date and just got Jellybean, and I am soooo happy I did...

This is 2 coats of Jellybean over 2 coats of Zoya Pippa.  Jellybean is a sheer, pale yellow base loaded with large blue, pink, and purple glitter and small pink, green, and yellow glitter.  I had a hard time reaching opacity with this one on it's own so, in my opinion, it's best to layer this one.  I like it over a brighter yellow base, Pippa, because it makes the colors of the glitter pop against the background.  Although, this would look just as pretty over a lighter yellow base, as the base on this one is a soft yellow (see below).  

Alternatively, could also "sandwich" this with a yellow jelly, such as Nubar Lemon, or a sheer yellow.  I tried it with the latter and used a previously-frustrating sheer yellow, BB Couture for Nails Kokomo...

This is one coat of Jellybean sandwiched between 4 coats of Kokomo.  I used 3 coats on the base and 1 coat over top of Jellybean.  Unfortunately, Kokomo is now discontinued, but any pale, sheer-ish yellow would work.

Julep Nessa

Hi everyone.  I hope you all had a great weekend.  I apologize for the short hiatus on my part.  I got a little busy this weekend, and I just didn't have anything drafted.  Plus, I kinda experienced a bit of manicure block.  I've still got it today, sadly.  So, I grabbed a polish that had been sitting on my desk for a few weeks.  This is Julep Nessa...

I received Julep Nessa in my last Maven box, and when I first saw it in the email, I was immediately intrigued.  It seemed so unique to me, and in real life, it is unique.  It's a daffodil-yellow, foil metallic, which is something that is not duplicated in my collection.  However, as unique as it is, it is also as equally difficult to use.  

I wanted to really like this polish.  I really did.  The formula had a little issue with brushstrokes, but that's to be expected with this type of finish.  The main issue I had with this polish was the brush.  Given their short-ish hand and long stem, Julep brushes are naturally a little harder to use than a traditional brush.  Unfortunately, the brush I had in my bottle of Nessa with more difficult than any Julep I've used to date. It flared out and was much like a mop.  So I had a hard time applying to polish neatly on my nail and I also had an issue with drag.  Perhaps I just had a wonky brush, though I have read a few other reviews of this polish, and see that several other girls had the same issue.  

I was able to reach opacity in 3 coats and if the brush wasn't so hard to use, I may be more positive about this one, because the color is really pretty, but application was just so crazy difficult that in my opinion, this one is a pass until Julep fixes the brush issue with this one.

Coco Rae Lemon Meringue

Today, I have for you a polish from a new polish line, Coco Rae.  Recently, Courtney with Coco Rae asked me if I would like to review one of her polishes and I was so excited as I love trying new brands.  

When I saw Courtney's new line, I thought many of the colors looked beautiful, but the one that really stood out to me was the bright yellow.  Yellows have become a recent obsession of mine, so when I opened the package and saw Lemon Meringue, I may have cheered (just a bit).  I also wasted no time in swatching it...

Lemon Meringue is an amazing, bright, lemon yellow creme.  I loved the color on this one.  It wasn't too light and it also wasn't like an egg yolk yellow.  I have only a handful of yellows, so it wasn't identical to any of the yellows in my collection.  Also, I know with yellows, the formula can be a bit iffy.  Yellows have a tendency to streak and take multiple coats to reach opacity.  This one had a great formula, though it did take 3 coats of Lemon Meringue to reach full opacity.  However, if you use a base coat and don't have blue-stained nails (like I do at the moment), I'm almost certain this could be a 2-coater for you.  The formula is on the thicker side, but it's not unmanageable at all.  I actually prefer yellow polishes to be thicker because they streak less.

30 Days of Blues for Autism Awareness - Happy Easter!

Today is Day 8 in my "30 Days of Blues" for Autism Awareness.  It is also Easter Sunday.  As I really didn't want to remove my manicure from yesterday (I loved it that much), I was a little at a loss for how I was going to do my manicure today, then I found the perfect Konad plate in my stamping supplies...

This is 2 coats of Zoya Yummy (a medium blue creme) and 3 coats of Zoya Pippa (a bright yellow creme) on my ring fingers and my thumbs (which you can't see).  I can't get enough of Zoyas lately.    I also applied the bunny and chick stamps on Konad plate s10 using Konad White Special Polish.

Nubar Jellybeans Review 2.0

No, you aren't having a case of deja vu, I did indeed previously review the Nubar Jellybeans collection.  However, recently I discovered that one of my pictures from that review, the one for Nubar Blueberry, had been stolen, linked back to this blog, and was being bashed because of my nail shape on a Russian LiveJournal group.  I had wondered why my traffic for that particular post had jumped from approximately 200 views to 1000+ views in a matter of days.  Well... that was why.  :(  I have since removed that post because it was being linked on the LiveJournal group.

At first I was going to ignore it.  No, at first I was going to close my blog and hide in my closet, but I quickly decided that was not the best course of action.  So, I then decided to ignore it.  Then I made the mistake of checking all of my traffic for the past year and I discovered that this was not the first occurrence of this happening.  I found where my blog had been linked on several international forums with the comments "horrible nail shape", "nasty nails", "disgusting", etc... always accompanying the posts.  

As you may know from my previous post regarding my nail shape, my skin is not thick, and I honestly don't know of anyone that likes to read negative comments about themselves.  But at that point, I figured I could no longer ignore it.  I could be upset and I could be heartbroken, and I could be mad (all of which I was), and then I decided to look at the comments constructively, even if that was not their intent.  

You see, I am always trying to grow as a blogger.  From my very first post, until now, 3+ years later, I feel that I have grown by leaps and bounds.  However, that's not to say that there isn't room for improvement.  I feel that you should never settle.  Your next post should always try and be better than your previous post.  With that idea in mind, I took a long hard look at my nails through a constructive eye and decided, that yes... I could better my nails and my pictures.

So I took my glass file and proceeded to rethink the shape of my nails.  I was able to thin out the flare on the sides and really taper them in.  Now, they aren't perfect, but I really do see an improvement.

With that long introduction said, here are the new and improved pictures for Nubar Jellybeans...   

Blue Raspberry - light aqua.  I love this color.  It's so pretty, and one of my favorites for spring this year.  Like I mentioned with Zoya Wednesday, a similar color, it reminds me of sea glass.  As I was applying this one, it really reminded me of RBL Bikini Bottom, though I no longer have that one to compare.  This one had one of the better applications in the collection.  3 coats. 

Blueberry - Blueberry - bright royal blue.  I don't own Revlon Royal, but judging on pictures, it seems very similar, only this one has a jelly-like finish.  I loved the color, and this go-around, the formula was much easier to work with.  3 coats.

Cherry - bright red.  Previously, I didn't like this one my skin.  However, I loved it this time.  It does have a bit of orange in it, but not as much as I previously thought.  his one had the thickest formula and it took me less coats to reach opacity.  2 coats.

Grape - Dusty medium purple.  This purple is quite nice, and it does have a bit of dustiness to it, like Julep Charlotte or RBL Purple Haze, though I think it's no wear near as dusty as Purple Haze.  I didn't really like the formula on this one.  I kept having an issue with it leveling.  Hence, the bumpiness.  And though it's one of the darker colors, it was also one of the sheerest and took me a few more coats to reach opacity.  4 coats.  

Kiwi - light lime green.  I'm calling this a lime, but it's more of a mix between a light spring green, mint green, and lime green.  I kept waffling on my color description, so I just gave up and called it "lime".  LOL.  I did get a slight case of red-hands with this one. This one was sheer, but easy to work with.  Like Grape, I did have an issue with the leveling.  4 coats.

Lemon - daffodil yellow.  This one is brighter than a pale yellow, but it's not a neon.  It's also not a medium yellow, such as China Glaze Happy Go Lucky.  The formula is thinner, but if you go slow and watch your strokes, it shouldn't be an issue.  Now that I've had a chance to revisit it, this one is probably tied with Blue Raspberry as my favorite of the collection.  4 coats.

Strawberry - light pink creme.  This one is very candy-like both in it's color and it's finish.  I really does remind me of strawberry candy.  It did take a few coats to reach opacity, but the formula on this one was very nice, so it wasn't an issue.  4 coats.

Toasted Marshmallow - light brown.  In my previous post, I erroneously called this one "Toasted Coconut".  In the bottle, this brown leans slightly pink, though I didn't really see that on my nails.  The formula was like that of Strawberry and Kiwi.  4 coats.

I still like this collection, probably even more so, now that I've had a chance to re-review it.  The jelly-like finish can be a bit hard to deal with, but nothing that would make me say not to purchase these if there was a color you were lemming (like say Blue Raspberry. LOL).

Tie-Dyed Nails

So, the concept of this manicure was to sponge rainbow colors on white nails using a makeup sponge.  It was a cool idea in my head.  Unfortunately, I didn't account for the colors becoming all muddled up.  So, it does look more "tie-dyed" than anything.  I used Zoya Sooki, OPI A Good Man-Darin is Hard to Find, ChG Happy Go Lucky, ChG Starboard, Zoya Robyn, and OPI Funky Dunkey over OPI Alpine Snow Matte.  I then topped it with 2 coats of Nubar Diamont. 

I think was a fail, but it's oddly fascinating, no?
